Safety is of the utmost importance for electricians working within the vicinity of electric circuits and networks. To help electricians remain protected against danger whilst at work, UK Power Networks is urging workers to ‘Think before you drill’.
Over the years, there has been a significant increase in the number of safety incidences that have occurred in the electrical industry nationwide. These can happen due to insufficient safety checks, meaning electric networks are not noticed whilst carrying out electrical work. Often, these accidents can result in electric shocks, burns, hospitalisation and they can even be fatal.
UK Power Networks delivers over a quarter of the electricity to the UK through substations, underground cables and overhead lines, supplying power to London, the South East and the East of England regardless of who people pay their energy bill to. Recent figures show an increase in the number of electricians drilling into UK Power Networks’ service cables entering properties, endangering electricians and the owners and users of the building.
To tackle these incidents, UK Power Networks works to raise awareness of the dangers of electricity. Their ‘Think before you drill’ message provides safety practices and guides electricians through electrical work to ensure they are aware of the risks while working alongside mains electricity networks.
UK Power Networks has produced two guides:
