In 2017, the Stroma Group completed its acquisition of leading building environmental sustainability company, HRS Services Ltd, along with BBS Environmental (BBSE) in 2016. The acquisitions strengthened the Group’s expertise in building compliance services already offered through the Group’s existing division, Stroma Tech.
HRS Services was a prominent provider of integrated technical services within the built environment. Founded by Ed and Tom Westgate in 1986, the company consisted of two core service offerings: building environmental sustainability services for the construction sector and inspection and maintenance services for road and rail infrastructure.
BBSE was founded in 2001 as a leading provider of environmental assessments services in the South East. Their expertise supported designers, developers, contractors and clients in achieving energy efficient and sustainable developments, covering residential and commercial projects. The company offered a range of services across the construction lifecycle, including SAP, SBEM & DSM calculations, BREEAM, ESOS assessments, thermal modelling an imaging, and more.
For a while, the three divisions operated as separate legal entities in order to fulfil existing client contracts and continue providing excellent quality of services. For over two years, a detailed integration programme took place to merge Stroma Tech, HRS Services Ltd and BBSE into one brand.
The acquisitions represent a coup to the Stroma Group, who now boast an increasingly broad multi-disciplinary service offering to the built environment and major UK industry sectors. Combining the respective strengths and expertise of Stroma Tech, HRS and BBSE creates the largest integrated services business of its kind in the UK.
All companies brought a range of complementary market-leading service portfolios (including air testing, acoustic testing, SAP, BREEAM, SBEM and Code for Sustainable Homes), whilst also being able to bring specific expertise to strengthen the core service provision of each business. For Stroma Tech this includes Health & Safety consultancy, Thermal Modelling and Planning Assistance; HRS offer new service lines such as infrastructure inspection & maintenance, noise, dust and vibration assessment, ecology assessments and air quality assessments. This exciting and diversified service offering will be available across the UK via an extensive network of expert field-based consultants.
February 2019 saw the official launch of Stroma Built Environment; bringing together Stroma Tech, HRS and BBSE. The new business is now one of the UK’s largest providers and environmental consultancy, performance testing and energy management services. HRS Service’s inspection and maintenance division was also rebranded as Stroma Specialist Access. With their existing accredited inspection and maintenance and IRATA rope access teams, Stroma Specialist Access continue their strong track record of inspection, examination and maintenance of major rail, highways and building assets.
Quotes from Steve Horrocks, Managing Director of Stroma Built Environment and Stroma Specialist Access
“In February 2019, we officially launched Stroma Built Environment. We hold quality at the heart of everything we do and strive to enhance our clients’ experiences of their development projects and add value at each stage of the process. Clients can trust a reputation built by BBSE, HRS Services and Stroma Tech for efficient, timely, and high-quality services delivered by experienced professionals.
I am also delighted to re-introduce our inspection & maintenance division to the market as Stroma Specialist Access. Clients can be assured of the same professional, specialist service delivery they have enjoyed whilst working with HRS. We now look to build on this reputation for quality, client focussed difficult access work across UK infrastructure and buildings.”
