Government releases home-buying and selling guides

The Government has recently released two new consumer guides which are designed to explain the process of how to buy and sell a home. The guides are free to download from the website and include key information explaining what an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is and the role that it and the energy assessor plays in the process.

Guide for How to Buy a Home

The Government’s guide to buying a home aims to deliver accurate information to consumers about the home buying process so that they can make informed decisions.

As a home is the largest purchase many people make during their lives, the guide also aims to reduce stress and explain the responsibilities of a prospective homeowner during the process.

The guide also talks about energy performance and introduces the EPC. Whilst not comprehensive on the subject, it does recognise the Energy Assessor as a specialist during the process and someone who can give advice about energy performance in the property.

Guide for How to Sell a Home

Conversely, the Government’s guide to selling a home discusses the important steps in the process of selling a property. The guide recognises that many people move home infrequently (typically every 15 to 20 years). Like the homebuying guide, the ‘How to Sell’ guide aims to reduce the stress encountered during this process by explaining the role of the home seller.

This guide goes into more detail about what the EPC is and how it is used during the home selling process. It explains things such as the 10 year validity period and includes a link to the online EPC register.

Comments on the new guides

“Anything which reinforces the major benefits of Energy Performance Certificates and the key role of energy assessors is a good thing. We encourage our members to raise awareness of the guides and communicate them across your business and client networks.

Stroma Certification continues to work with BEIS, MHCLG and industry steering groups to champion and promote the work of our members so that the EPC is being used to its fullest extent. We would welcome feedback from our members about other ways we can support EPC awareness amongst the general public.”
