We do BIM… What’s the state of play?

Given that I am quite active on LinkedIn, I thought it might be interesting to have a look at people involved with Building Information Modelling (BIM) in the United Kingdom – Niraj Mistry, Head of BIM (Stroma Certification).

Creating a baseline

On the 12th April 2018, LinkedIn had a little over 30,000 people that claimed to be involved with BIM, by some description on their profile page.

Over a third of people involved with BIM are in the South East. The West Midlands has the second highest population of people, with Central areas coming in a close third. The percentage breakdown by region can be seen below.

How do we interpret this?

The locations of people tell us what we’d expect to see regarding population of workforce and location of firms conducting project work. However, it does raise a few questions:

  • Are there certain parts of the UK where people have poor access to current information and learning resources with respect to BIM?
  • Are there areas of the UK where the requirement for BIM adoption has not seen a significant uptake?
  • Does digitisation mean that our location is irrelevant?
  • Do we have organisational BIM champions distributed where we need them?
  • Are people afraid of putting BIM on their profile?
  • Are people claiming to do BIM, when they don’t?
  • Do we need to do more to help certain regions upskill on BIM?
  • Do we need to do more to carry the BIM message to these regions?
  • Are people scared of BIM?
  • Do people think this is a fad that will just pass?
  • Do we know what BIM is?
  • Are people waiting to be told to upskill?
  • Do people not know how to get involved in BIM?
  • Do people not think it’s relevant to their project, discipline, service, or product is not impacted by the BIM and digital evolution?
  • Are people just not bothered?

This list of questions is by no means exhaustive and could go on for a few pages.

At this point, I’ll let you draw your own conclusions to what this information means. It will be interesting to see how this area of the industry develops in the coming years…
