Air Tightness Testing Training

Stroma Built Environment offers a range of Air Tightness Testing Training courses, including ATTMA Level 1 and ATTMA Level 2, to determine the competence and capabilities of Air Tightness Testers.

There are several levels of competence defined by the Department for Housing, Communities and Local Government for Air Tightness Testing. These levels are defined in a Minimum Technical Competence (MTC) document which identifies the National Occupational Standards (NOS) applicable for each level. This is available to download from ATTMA.

Stroma Built Environment offer level 1 and level 2 training courses for air tightness testing. The level 1 course is aimed at delegates wishing to enter the air tightness testing industry. The course provides a combination of theory and practical training followed by three final examinations. Upon completion delegates will be eligible to register on the Air Tightness Testing and Measurement Association (ATTMA) competent persons scheme and test domestic dwellings and small simple commercial buildings. The level 2 course is available to existing level 1 delegates that wish to progress on to carrying out multi-fan testing to larger commercial buildings. This modular course is consists of a combination of theory and practical exercises and examinations. Additional modules are also offered for delegates that wish to refresh their envelope calculation skills and gain the Envelope Calculation Technician status.

Course Content

Level 1
Level 1 is the entry level for new Air Tightness Testers, allowing them to test single dwellings and small, simple buildings with a single fan. Stroma provides a 4-day course of theory and practical training and examinations to enable delegates to register as a Level 1 Tester on the ATTMA scheme.

Days 1-3: Classroom
Covering the NOS documents as required by the MTC for a Level 1 Tester: ASTATT1, ASTATT2, ASTATT3, ASTATT5, ASTATT6, ASTATT7, ASTATT8 and ASTATT9.

Day 4 – Examinations

  • Multiple choice theory exam
  • Envelope Area Calculation exam
  • Practical Air Tightness Test exam

Report review
After successful completion of the course, candidates are required to carry out 3 Air Tightness Tests with full reports and calculations. Once the acceptance of these reports has been confirmed and you pass this review, you will be referred for registration to the ATTMA competent person scheme.

Level 2
Stroma Built Environment provides the Level 2 Training course for Air Tightness Testers who are registered on the ATTMA competent person scheme as a Level 1 Tester and test non-simple buildings.

Level 2 is a modular course designed to progress Air Tightness Testers from Level 1, or to allow delegates to register as Envelope Area Calculation Technicians. The Envelope Area Calculations Technician module is for individuals who are authorised to carry out envelope area and volume calculations but are not authorised to test.

Module 1 – Basic Envelope Area Calculations: A refresher module in 3D modelling of simple envelope areas and volumes.
Module 2 – Advanced Envelope Area Calculations: Covering advanced envelope area calculation techniques needed for Level 2 testing, including circles, ellipses and curves, multiple angled pitch roof interfaces and tapering on plan with a pitched roof.
Module 3 – Mutli-Fan Testing: Covering the testing of larger and more complicated buildings with multiple fans. Specific topics include how to test larger buildings with multiple fans, permanently compartmentalised buildings and large extensions to commercial buildings.
Module 4 – Multi-Fan Practical: The application of the information covered in Module 3.

Examinations
A practical exam, involving the testing of a large commercial building and a theory exam which is a multiple choice paper on key topics covered in Modules 3 and 4.

Level 3
Level 3 is for testers who have achieved Level 1 and Level 2 and test large and complex high-rise and phased handover zonal buildings. It enables testers to test any building. Level 3 must be attained through a technical interview and the submission of a report detailing advanced, technical and applied knowledge and understanding.

I have worked as a level 2 air tightness tester for Stroma for over 11 years. In this time I have carried out in excess of 1,700 air tightness tests ranging from dwellings to large complex commercial buildings. I have also carried out air barrier design consultancy and audits on numerous buildings. My responsibilities now focus on delivering the level 1 and 2 training courses, compliance and technical support.
