About the Home Quality Mark

The Home Quality Mark was launched by BRE on 3 March 2015. Compliance with HQM enables home builders to demonstrate the high-quality of their homes in order to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. It will also secure compliance with the requirements of the Building Regulations. Homebuyers have the confidence that any new home built to the Home Quality Mark is well-designed, well-built and cost-effective to run.

Benefits of the Home Quality Mark

There are many benefits to having the Home Quality Mark for your homes, including:

  • Demonstrate building to a quality and sustainable standard
  • Produce high-quality homes
  • Differentiate your homes from less efficient rivals
  • Give homebuyers confidence to invest
  • Potential insurance and mortgage interest rate incentives for homebuyers
  • Comply with planning conditions in the Building Regulations

Measuring the Home Quality Mark

Overall home ratings are based on a simple scale of 1 to 5 stars. The rating is compiled from three assessment areas:

  • Knowledge sharing: ensuring designers, constructors, clients and householders are aware of sustainable processes and solutions
  • Our surroundings: assesses how well a home works with the environment and responds to population changes and climate fluctuations
  • My home: rewards cost-effective and healthy living spaces
