Formal assessment of construction and demolition noise and vibration (BS 5228:2009) is often a pre-commencement planning requirement that can hold up the start of site works and delay the programme if not carried out at the right time. By using the latest equipment to monitor noise, vibration and a range of dust particulates, we are able to provide short and long-term measurements at any stage of a project through the use of remotely monitored equipment with automated threshold warnings issued to any nominated person.

Stroma Built Environment can provide noise and vibration assessment and monitoring to meet a wide range of requirements from acoustic design of buildings and infrastructure to construction environmental impact control.
Baseline noise and vibration surveys are often required at an early stage of a project design (typically RIBA Stage 2, but can be provided throughout all RIBA stages prior to the commencement of works) to inform architectural design requirements as well as ventilation and overheating design to meet identified building performance requirements and Local Authority planning conditions, BREEAM and other sustainability scheme credits.
The noise climate (or vibration climate) across a site can have a very significant impact on the design requirements of the building which affects location, orientation and massing as well as internal layout and most often glazing and ventilation specification. Road traffic, rail and aircraft are typical sources of noise that need to be assessed as well as industrial and building services noise.
It is also normally required to assess how your project itself may impact on its surroundings. Typical considerations include building services noise impact, construction and demolition noise/vibration impact and building or infrastructure operational impact.
Stroma Built Environment can provide baseline noise and vibration surveys at site from an early stage in the concept design. We offer assessment and mitigation reports to include with planning submissions. These support the development and can be used by architects and building services engineers to inform the building design and specification and noise impact assessment (e.g. BS 4142:2014).
At the post-construction stage, planning conditions and BREEAM requirements often require demonstration of compliance with identified noise and vibration requirements.
Local Authorities are increasingly requiring assessment and monitoring of construction impacts to be carried out throughout construction and demolition projects to help inform mitigation measures that may be required to reduce the risk of adverse health impacts of new development on the surrounding area. The range of requirements imposed on developers and contractors for construction impact assessment can vary considerably depending on Local Authority, site sensitivity and the scope, scale and duration of the construction works.

We can help clients to minimise the risk of adverse impact and complaint. Where necessary, formal detailed assessment (e.g. BS 5228:2009) can be carried out based on baseline surveys of the site and surrounding area.
We use state-of-the-art noise, vibration and dust particulate monitoring stations – installed and agreed site locations – to meet planning and other requirements. Clients have remote access via a web portal and real-time data availability. This allows for quick evaluation and response to potential adverse impacts. Automated threshold warning alerts can be sent to nominated persons when there is a risk of non-compliance to ensure corrective action can be taken.
The range of receptors potentially sensitive to adverse construction impact includes residential, education and healthcare developments, industrial processes or listed buildings.
In connection with the National Air Quality Objectives 1997, the majority of the UK’s urban areas have been designated Air Quality Management Areas (AQMAs). In accordance with Local Authority policies, continuous dust monitoring (or particulate monitoring such as to PM10) may be required during demolition or the construction of a new development to minimise air pollution, nuisance and associated health risks to nearby building occupants.
Our dust assessments can evaluate the potential environmental impacts a construction site may have on air pollution due to the dust it may generate. Dust action or management plans will be produced to assess the risks and potential need for monitoring throughout the phase of a project.
A range of dust particulate sizes and gas types can be monitored including MCERTS accredited PM10 monitoring as often specified by Local Authorities.
