Kayleigh joined Stroma Building Control in 2018 as a Trainee Building Control Surveyor in our Watford office, whilst studying for her NVQ Level 6 in Building Control.

The NVQ Level 6 in Building Control is aimed for individuals working within the building control industry; whether that’s for Local Authorities or independent Approved Inspectors like Stroma Building Control.

Becoming a qualified Building Control Surveyor

Kayleigh’s NVQ qualification, along with Stroma’s on-the-job training will eventually lead her to become a qualified Building Control Surveyor. Working with Stroma Building Control has given Kayleigh a wide-range of experience in the building control process, including submitting and assessing initial notice applications, right through to supporting surveyors on live projects. More recently, Kayleigh has been given over 25 of her own projects, varying from loft conversions/extensions to new-build dwellings and commercial office units, as well as conversions into flats/bedsits.

As part of her final unit for the NVQ, Kayleigh was tasked to organise a CPD event for her colleagues within our building control division. To pass the level 6 unit, Kayleigh needed to provide evidence including email trails with CPD companies, venue bookings, event agendas, and completed feedback forms. Firstly, Kayleigh needed to think about suitable CPD topics which would benefit herself and her colleagues working in the building control field.

Organising the CPD

To kick-start arranging the CPD event, Kayleigh contacted Kingspan to ask for their availability to present their insultation products and systems for roofs, walls, floors and building services, and how it would benefit surveyors when advising clients on projects.

After choosing a date and ensuring everyone’s calendar was free, she then contacted several venues to get prices. Eventually, Leavesden Green Community Hub in Watford was selected to host the CPD event.

Staff from across our Watford, Bedford, Colchester and Cannock offices were invited to attend the 4-hour event, which could have been used to fulfil annual CPD requirements. Kingspan attended to discuss their insultation products (Structural Insulated Panels: TEK Building System & Kooltherm K100 Phenolic Insulation) and how they can be used on developments.

Our Division Head of Training, Chris McLeod, also attended the event to discuss the benefits and opportunities available to staff through Stroma’s Training Academy; a new training initiative allowing staff to gain additional qualifications, professional memberships and chartership through CABE.

Finally, Andy Mitchell, Head of Energy at Stroma Built Environment gave our colleagues an insight into the services offered through our Built Environment division and the wider Group. This gave staff from Building Control invaluable knowledge about cross-selling opportunities and services which could benefit our clients at a later stage in their project.

Overall the day went smoothly, and the feedback received was extremely positive. Apparently, the spread of the food that was put on for lunch was spot on! Well done Kayleigh!

Stroma’s Training Academy

Kayleigh has now completed her NVQ Level 6 in Building Control. Her next steps are becoming chartered with CABE and is expecting to go for her professional interview either later this year or early next. As an enrolled student on Stroma’s Training Academy, Kayleigh will be supported to achieve further qualifications and professional memberships, along with regular training, CPD and workshops.

"I’m extremely pleased with how well the CPD went and was received by my colleagues. My future ambitions are to become Chartered and have my own patch where all my jobs will be. I’d like to further my experience as much as possible, with the help from all my colleagues at Stroma Building Control. Thanks again for all of your support."
