Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA)
About Domestic Energy Assessment (DEA)
Housing is responsible for approximately 27% of the UK’s carbon dioxide emissions. Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) have been introduced as part of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2003) to help improve the energy efficiency of buildings, cut carbon emissions and tackle climate change. An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is required for any existing property which is sold or let in the UK. EPCs form an important part of the Home Information Pack (HIP) allowing comparison of the energy efficiency of different properties.
An EPC provides a building with an energy performance rating on a scale of 'A’ to 'G', with 'A' being the most energy efficient and 'G' being the least. EPCs include a detailed Recommendation Report which outlines measures which could be taken to reduce home energy use and carbon dioxide emissions. EPCs can only be produced by qualified, certification domestic energy assessors (DEAs). Newly constructed dwellings require a SAP energy assessment.

FREE CPD Events for DEAs
Stroma is holding a number of free CPD events for DEAs, to be held across the country throughout 2010.
These half day events are free of charge to Stroma members, and not only offer attendees 3 hours of free structured CPD, but also a complimentary pack of (CERT) energy saving products and a voucher for 30% off Stroma training. If you wish to attend any of the events shown below, please view available locations and fill in your details at www.stroma.com/q1cpd, at least one week before the desired attendance date.
Non-Stroma members are also welcome to attend, by filling in the registration form at www.stroma.com/q1cpd and become certified with Stroma for free.
Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment (Dip DEA) - Level 3
Domestic energy assessors collect data about a property including dimensions, construction and services, in order to generate an EPC using approved RdSAP software.
Stroma offers the City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Domestic Energy Assessment (Dip DEA). This 3 day course covers all elements of a DEA’s role and includes practical experience of property surveying and producing EPCs using Stroma’s user-friendly RdSAP software.
To qualify as an assessor, candidates must attend the training course and sit a multiple choice City and Guilds online examination, which can be taken either at the end of the course or at the candidate’s convenience. Additionally, candidates must submit a portfolio including evidence of business skills and 5 EPCs. The APEL route is not available for the DEA qualification.
FREE RdSAP Software
Stroma has developed user-friendly online RdSAP software which is available free of charge to all Stroma-certification DEAs. This software enables users to generate EPCs quickly and easily.
In addition to the online software, we offer free Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) software to our DEA members. These save time by allowing DEAs to enter property data directly into the PDA rather than using paper site notes. The data is then automatically uploaded into the appropriate sections of the online software, allowing the EPC to be lodged on return to the office without any further data input.
Certification
Once qualified, domestic energy assessors are invited to join Stroma’s certification scheme. Our experienced DEA technical team is available to support assessors with lodgements and deal with enquiries.
