Air Tightness
Stroma is one of only two organisations approved by BINDT to provide the training required to carry out domestic air-tightness tests. Once a candidate has successfully completed Stroma's course, they are automatically certified as an individual under BINDT's competent person scheme. This is a mandatory requirement to practise air leakage testing in the UK.
What is Air Tightness Testing?
Building Regulations Approved Document Parts L1A and L2A stipulate air-tightness testing for new developments throughout England and Wales.
Air-tightness testing is a means of quantifying the extent to which air leaks through the building envelope of a property. The testing procedure measures the infiltration of air (uncontrolled air leakage), to establish the performance of a building in terms of both energy efficiency and fabric integrity.
Air tightness can only be verified by a competent air permeability test engineer using a non-destructive test procedure. Air leakage tests benefit clients by helping to make their buildings more energy efficient, cost-effective and comfortable.
What is BINDT?
The British Institute of Non-Destructive Testing (BINDT) is an organisation of varying technical disciplines covering a range of non-destructive testing. This professional body is concerned with the training and education of its members, the promotion of good practise and the progression of the science behind it.
